The Three Steps: Find

Find Your Story

No ideas? No problem! If you've read even one book before, you can do this! All art is derivative, and writing is no exception. Start from what you like, and set out from there.

Genres

Stories are organized into genres by the collection of ideas and themes and feelings that they have. Whatever you have been reading recently has been subconciously preparing you to write in that genre. Start with the kind of story that you love and work from there.

Characters

Regardless if you base them off yourself, someone you know, or a character from something else to start with, as you write your character will start to become their own unique person. If you put yourself in their shoes, you may be surprised where they will take you.

Setting

Where your story takes place can be as big a part of the story as the who or the what. Start with a place and populate it with the kind of people that might be there, and see what kinds of things happen to them there.
